The ‘near’ Future

What is the ‘near’ future ? In English and in French the near future is used to talk about things which are going to happen soon. I am going to play Je vais jouer

Just like in English, in French we talk about what we are going to do. How is it formed ? Just like in English, in French we talk about what we are going to do. I am going to play Je vais jouer

So … French phrases in the near future are made up of a PRONOUN, AUXILIARY & MAIN VERB. I am going to play PRONOUN AUXILIARY MAIN VERB Je vais jouer

What are the ‘PRONOUNS’ ? Pronouns are words like ‘I’, ‘you’, ‘he’, and ‘she’. They have their equivalent in French. PRONOUN (I) (you) (he) (she) je tu il elle nous vous ils elles (we) (you) (they)

What is the AUXILIARY VERB ? The auxiliary verb is used to tell us when things are going to happen in time (the tense). In both English and French, the auxiliary verb changes when linked to a pronoun.

How does the Auxiliary verb change ? ‘aller’ – ‘to go’ ‘aller’ is an irregular verb in French. We have to learn how it changes. It changes when linked to a pronoun. je tu il elle nous vous ils elles vais vas va allons allez vont (I) (you) (he) (she) (we) (they) (am going) (are going) (is going)

Here are some common verb infinitives… jouer aller faire acheter visiter prendre dormir parler = to play = to go = to do = to buy = to visit = to take = to sleep = to talk manger rester voir écouter boire lire regarder travailler = to eat = to stay = to see = to listen = to drink = to read = to watch = to work

… and here are some examples of the ‘near’ future tense. Je vais parler de mes vacances. Nous allons visiter le château. Tu vas dormir ? Ils vont aller au cinéma Il va jouer au foot. Elle va faire du cheval. Je vais regarder un film Vas - tu prendre le bus ? Vous allez manger une pizza. I am going to talk about my holidays. We are going to visit the castle. You are going to sleep ? They are going to go to the cinema He is going to play football. She is going to (do) go riding. I am going to watch a film. Are you going to take the bus ? You are going to eat a pizza.

Change the verb ‘aller’ to it’s correct form. So try these ! Change the verb ‘aller’ to it’s correct form. Nous (aller) visiter le château. Vous (aller) rester calme. Je (aller) parler de moi. Ils (aller) jouer au tennis. Elle (aller) jouer aux cartes. Tu (aller) manger des frites ? (aller)-tu monter au cheval ? Elles (aller) aller au parc. Nous allons visiter le …. Vous allez rester calme. Je vais parler de moi. Ils vont jouer au tennis. Elle va jouer aux cartes. Tu vas manger des frites ? Vas-tu monter au cheval ? Elles vont aller au parc. …Well done !!

Translate these phrases to French. Now try this… Translate these phrases to French. I am going to stay. We are going to buy a pizza. They are going to visit the castle. You are going to play football. She is going to listen. He is going to go to the cinema. Are you going to eat ? They are going to go swimming. Je vais rester. Nous allons acheter une pizza.
