Préférer – to prefer Acheter – to buy In French 1A a few irregular verbs were introduced to you as well as a group of verbs called « er » verbs. In lesson 18 we are going to learn about another group of verbs called stem changers. Acheter – to buy Préférer – to prefer

Acheter – to buy achète Nous achetons Je achètes Vous achetez achète Tu Vous achetez achète Il/ Elle achètent Ils/Elles Notice that the stem of the verb is the same for the je, tu, il/elle and ils/elles forms, but different for the nous and vous forms.

Amener – to bring ( a person) amène Nous amenons Je amènes Tu Vous amenez amène Il/ Elle amènent Ils/Elles The verb amener is conjugated in the same way that acheter is conjugated. The verb amener is to bring a person. The verb apporter is to bring a thing. Apporter is a regular « er » verb.

Préférer – to prefer préfère Nous préférons Je préfères Vous préférez Tu Vous préférez préfère Il/ Elle préfèrent Ils/Elles The verb préférer has accents on the infinitive and the accents change on the je, tu, il/elle, and Ils/Elles forms. The accents are the same on the nous and vous forms

Espérer – to hope espère Nous espérons Je espères Vous espérez espère Tu Vous espérez espère Il/ Elle espèrent Ils/Elles Although the verb espérer only has one accent, it is the same as préférer in that the accent changes from an accent aigu to an accent grave on the je, tu, il/elle and ils/elles forms.

Mettre – to put,place (not a stem changer, but irregular mets Nous mettons Je mets Tu Vous mettez met Il/ Elle mettent Ils/Elles The verb mettre has several meanings . . .

To put, place Je mets mes livres sur la table I put my books on the table. To put on, wear Caroline met une robe rouge. Caroline puts on a red dress. To turn on Nous mettons la telle. We turn on the TV
