I see a truck. Do you speak German? He doesn’t like chocolate! We’re learning French. You are wonderful students! Marc and Nicole have two kids. They’re coming over tonight. Simple present: one word Present Progressive: be + -ing: “am doing, are doing, is doing, etc.” – sometimes used as immediate future

Simple present only, no progressive. Je parle français. Je regarde la télé en ce moment. Questions do not require a helping verb (more on questions later) Vous parlez anglais? Negation: ne…pas (verb goes in the middle) Nous ne parlons pas espagnol.

Conjugate: to change the form depending on who’s doing the action I speak you speak he speaks we speak you all speak they speak

Infinitive: the simplest form of a verb. In English: begins with TO to speak, to dance, to finish, to choose, to make, to read, to sell In French: ends with –ER, -IR, or –RE parler, danser, finir, choisir, faire, lire, vendre

Regular / Irregular: a verb is irregular if it does not follow the typical pattern of conjugation Regular in English: I speak, you speak, he speaks, we speak, you speak, they speak. Irregular in English: to be: I am, you are, he is, we are, you are, they are. (We don’t say “I be”, etc.)

Wait! Not quite! We need to review the subject pronouns first: SingularPlural 1 st personje = Inous = we 2 nd persontu = youvous = you (plural or formal) 3 rd personil = he, it elle = she, it on = “one”, we, you, they, people (treated as singular) ils = they (masculine or mixed) elles = they (feminine)
