J’aime chanter! Je chante bien! Les phrases, les questions, ( faaaah z) ( kess tee yõh ) et les impératifs en français (laze E m pay raaah teef õ frã say ) ) 1) 2) 5) mercredi – le 29 octobre I. Copiez!!! 3) Comment s’appelle le garçon? 4) I l s’appelle Elvis! lundi – le 9 novembre mardi – le 3 décembre

Were you able to understand both sentences? 1) The first sentence means: I love to sing! The subject is J’ (Je) and is a pronoun! The verb is aime. The infinitive is chanter. 2) The second sentence means: I sing well! The subject is The verb is The adverb is Je. chante. bien. There is no infinitive. There is only a verb! 1) J’aime chanter! 2) Je chante bien! II. Un pacquet!

1)J’aime chanter! ( I like to sing!) 2) Je chante bien! ( I sing well!) II. Un pacquet! Notice that in the first sentence, the English sentence contains a verb preceded by the word “to”. That whole, complete part of any verb (English or French) is called the infinitive. Again, you recognize an infinitive in English because it is a verb with the word “to” in front of it! Obviously, through common sense and observation of the second sentence, every sentence does not have to have an infinitive! Let’s look at the next slide!

An example in English: “To sing” is an ________ infinitive, I sing. Un exemple en français: est _________un infinitif, but in a sentence, ______ mais dans une phrase, ________Je chante.

Je chante bien! ( I sing well!) See how the infinitive was broken apart (blown up, conjugated) in both English and French so that you can speak correctly? How silly it would be to say in English: “I to sing well.” It would be just as silly to say en français: Today we are going to learn how to blow up French infinitives to find the verb that lives within them. This blowing up is called “ conjugating ” an infinitive, and its name is a “ conjugation ”. We conjugate infinitives in French and in English so that we can make good sentences, questions, and even imperatives!

Before we start conjugating infinitives though, let’s review the parts of a sentence and how they are made up. You already know the French parts of a sentence because you speak English! p.2

Tu sais déjà les parties d’une phrase! (day jah) (You know already the parts of a sentence!) 1) Le sujet2) Le verbe3) Le reste! a) Les personnes (people) b) Les lieux (places) (lay lee yurh) c) Les choses (things) (lay shoze) Les mots d’action (action words) a)Les noms (nouns) b)Les infinitifs (infinitives) c) Les adjectifs (adjectives) d)Les adverbes (adverbs) e)Les prépositions f) Etc! J’ aime le tennis. 6) Exemple: Les 3 parties d’une phrase sont: (The 3 parts of a sentence are: p.2

Before we learn how to conjugate (to blow up) infinitives to turn them into verbs though, we need to look at the first part of any sentence, the subject! As you know, the subject can be either a noun or a pronoun and is the STAR of the sentence. Nouns are names of people, places, or things, and pronouns are their substitutes! This is the same in English and French. There is only one major difference though with French and English pronouns. There are 9 subject pronouns in French while there are only 8 in English! We also know that nouns and their pronouns can be singular or plural!

Pensez! Some examples! Quelques noms anglais: (kell kuh nõh ) Kevin A boy Allison A girl A bookA car The nouns in capital letters are called proper nouns in English. Marietta Dickerson

Pensez! Quelques noms en français: (kell kuh nõh ) ***Donc, Au singulier! (oh s ɛ ̃ gew lee A) Un garçonUne filleUn livreUne voiture Ou... 11)

Quelques noms en français: Donc, Au pluriel! (oh pluh ree el ) des garçons (day) des filles des voitures des livres 12) ***13)

The singular pronouns in English I You He (Marc/ the boy) She (Anne/ the girl) It p.3

Les pronoms au pluriel en anglais! (oh pluh ree el õ nã glay ) We You They So, the English pronouns are: I,I, You,He,She,It,and We,You,They Total: 8 Page 3

Je / J’ = I Tu = You (to 1 friend, 1 family member, 1 child, or 1 pet) Il = He or It (m) (Marc, le garçon, le livre, etc.) Elle = She or It (f ) (Anne, la fille, la voiture, etc.) On = People (in general)

Que veut dire les pronoms au pluriel? (vurh deer ) Nous (noo) Vous Ils (eel) Elles ( L ) = We = You = They to 1 adult to a group about an all guy group about a group of Guys & Girls about an all girl group Ne prononcez pas le !

parler français jouer au tennis chanter Les infinitifs en -er ! Since these infinitives end in –er, they are called the -er verbs! They are the most numerous infinitives in the French language and also the easiest for American students to learn to conjugate (to blow apart so that you can match the right form of the verb with the right subject pronoun - - therefore sounding intelligent !) You have already seen how silly it is to use the English infinitive incorrectly in sentences. You would never say “I to sing well.”, and you must never say Instead look what happens when we conjugate ! p.4

Maintenant, we’re ready to conjugate so that we can speak in sentences, questions, and commands that don’t have infinitives! To conjugate means to blow up an infinitive to find the verb within it! Watch how it’s done! Je m’appelle Elvis. J’aime chanter. Je chante bien.

Comment conjuger un infinitif en –er How to conjugate an -er infinitive 1) Define the infinitive in English. 2) Cross off the –er thereby losing the A sound and underline the stem (every other letter left in the infinitive)! 3) Count the number of letters left in the stem and write it down. You must use all these letters in the verb or … p.5 Let’s recap the rules on how to conjugate -er infinitives in French!

4) List all the 9 French Pronouns in order. (Be sure to keep them across from their corresponding plural pronoun.) 5) Write the stem beside each pronoun. 6) Add the appropriate ending to each stem. Put a star beside the 7 which are pronounced just like the stem! That’s all it is! That’s a conjugation! (Matching the subject with the right verb!) Quel facile!
