Transcription de la présentation:

Notes le premier mars L’imparfait et le passé composé ensemble We can use the passé composé and the imparfait (imperfect) together to talk about the past.

The passé composé is used to relate actions that began, ended or took place at a specific time in the past. It is not used to express habitual or on-going actions in the past. (During the February break, we went skiing.) (Anne went to the movies with her friend Saturday afternoon.) (You bought a new car last year.)

The imparfait is used to express habitual, repetitive and on-going actions in the past. When the action began or ended is not important. English often uses the expression used to… or would… to express this notion. (When I was little, I used to ski every weekend in winter.) (When we would go to our grandparents house, we would have a great time.)

Expressions often used with the passé composé aujourd’hui (today) ce matin (this morning) cet après-midi (this afternoon) hier (yesterday) la semaine dernière (last week) le mois dernier (last month) l’année dernière (last year) une fois (once) etcétera…

Expressions often used with the imparfait souvent (often) avant (before) toujours (always) de temps en temps (once in a while) tous les jours (everyday) tous les week-ends (every weekend) tous les samedis (every Saturday) etcétera…

When we use the passé composé and the imparfait together, the passé composé expresses the action that took place and the imparfait describes what was going on when the action took place. (My mother was talking on the phone when my father arrived.) (We were preparing dinner when we heard the news.)
