Negative sentences Questions FR1

Review: Rewrite these sentences in their negative form. Je suis étudiant. Il est jeune. Elle est mariée. Ils sont sympathiques.

Forming negative sentences: SUBJECT+ NE + VERB + PAS … (Il) (n’) (est) (pas) gentil NOTE: « ne » becomes « n’ » when followed by a vowel.

Write 3 negative sentences to describe yourself. Ex: Je ne suis pas vieille.

Questions: Introduction Several ways to answer a question that will be answered in yes or no: Rising intonation Placing est-ce que before the subject + rising intonation Placing n’est ce pas? or non? at the end of a question with rising intonation

1) Rising intonation Tu es étudiant? Pronounce the 2 sentences:

Question or Statement? Listen to your teacher and say if the sentences she says are questions or statements

Practice in pairs Read one of the sentences and your partner has to guess if it’s the question or the statement that you read. Then, switch roles a. Tu es sympathique b. Tu es sympathique? a. Il est jeune b. Il est jeune? a. Elle est mariée. b. Elle est mariée?

Writing and Oral Practice Write 5 sentences to get to know more about your partner. Ask him/her your questions. He/she answers in full sentences. Ex: Tu es étudiante? Oui, je suis étudiante (NOT JUST OUI/NON)

2) Placing est-ce que before the subject + rising intonation Tu es étudiant? Est-ce que tu es étudiant? NOTEs: There is a dash between est and ce. You still need to use rising intonation because it’s a question.

Listen and repeat Est-ce que tu es jeune? Est-ce qu’il est professeur? Est-ce que nous sommes sympathiques? Est-ce que vous êtes professeur de français?

Practice in pairs Look at the 5 questions that you asked your partner and rewrite them using « est-ce que »

3) Add n’est-ce pas? or non? at the end of the question Tu es étudiant? Est-ce que tu es étudiant? Tu es étudiant, non? OR Tu es étudiant, n’est-ce pas? NOTE: You use this type of question when you’re pretty sure that the answer is « Yes ». Translation: You’re a student, right?

Transform these statements into questions Transform these statements into questions. Use the 3 different ways to ask questions for each Ex: Tu es étudiant. Tu es étudiant? Est-ce que tu es étudiant? Tu es étudiant, non?

Transform into questions Tu es jeune. Il est célibataire. Nous sommes sympathiques. Elles sont belles. Ils sont vieux. Continue with practice activities from the textbook
