RecoverPoint : fonctionnement

It sits between the host and the array by utilizing software embedded in the array which is called the Splitter [CLICK] The splitter copies incoming WRITE commands from the host and sends them to the RecoverPoint Appliance (RPA). The RPA updates a Journal which stores all the changes made to the data. This Journal is the RecoverPoint secret sauce that enables us to recover to ANY POINT IN TIME. When a physical RPA is used, it connect to the VNX via FC. When a virtual RPA is used, it connect to the VNX using iSCSI. The data in the journal is used populate a copy reflecting the selected point in time for recovery or testing. Normally the copy is hidden but acts as a mirror This configuration is known as LOCAL REPLICATION, or LOCAL PROTECTION In REMOTE REPLICATION, the data from the source RPA is sent to a remote target system : over IP or FC, in Sync or Async modes. A hypothetical organization has a set of applications deployed among several different servers and databases. An order-entry application may be deployed on a high-end server, for example, running UDB. That may feed a shipping application running on Oracle on a UNIX system. Information about orders and shipments might be fed by the SCM (supply chain management) system into the CRM (customer relationship management) system running on SQL Server on a Windows Server system. How does this organization assure consistency among these diverse databases, applications, and servers? One approach might be to create a single, monolithic database environment. This is not optimal for a variety of reasons. Another might be to write “handshake” logic to assure coordination and consistency among applications. This is difficult to do and maintain. Many organizations simply ignore the consistency issue and live with the consequences, which is not optimal if customer satisfaction is important. A RecoverPoint consistency group is a technology that groups together various volumes or LUNs, either on a single system or across systems, so that when they are protected and recovered, they are handled as a group. With RecoverPoint you either get all of the data or none of it—you will never get part of the data. An EMC networked storage infrastructure, meanwhile, can help ensure consistency among various distributed elements of the information infrastructure. EMC can provide a unique enterprise-consistent capability by creating consistency groups across multiple storage systems with a mix of open systems and mainframe, ensuring a consistent view of all your data. Each approach and its corresponding technologies has its place depending on the business need and cost. Traditionally, businesses relied solely on once-a-day backup routines using traditional tape-based or disk-to-tape-based data protection solutions. But as business requirements are becoming more and more demanding the challenge of resolving corrupted and lost data becomes more and more vital to IT organizations. With the cause being fat fingers, viruses, corruption or data over-runs the IT organizations can no longer rely on backups alone and are complementing backup solutions with data replication technology. There are mainly two options when looking to improve recovery objectives for critical applications: Snapshots enable multiple application restore points – primarily for faster recoveries, but also for use cases such as test/dev, reporting, analysis, and repurposing. Snapshots are made by regularly “syncing” a production volume with a secondary copy and then breaking off the copy for later usage. RecoverPoint’s Continuous Replication enables any point in time recovery – for recovery to the millisecond, using a unique DVR-like rollback mechanism. Continuous replication provides the benefits of near RPO with any-point-in-time replication capabilities, meaning you can restart your application from a fraction of a second before the data corrupted. Continuous replication can significantly enhance your current business and technical operations by providing you with access points to production data; enabling parallel-processing activities like backups, as well as disk-based recovery after logical corruptions; and creating test environments for faster time to revenue for applications. Oracle software provides technologies for recovery today, such as Oracle DataGuard. However, even these technologies are limited in their ability to recovery not just the database, but the applications that run on them and the middleware connecting them. EMC RecoverPoint allows the use of application-aware recovery software which will simultaneously track every Oracle incoming write before it is written to disk and log this in what we call a recovery journal. This recovery journal is kept on local disk and can be replicated remotely being compressed and de-duplicated to reduce the cost of disaster recovery bandwidth up to 9x. From this technology we can now set more granular recovery points of your Oracle applications to roll them back to any point-in-time needed, and do so using just one tool, vs. combining backups, database replication and other tools. Now with RecoverPoint they can bring their Oracle databases back to any point in time at 2-4 minute intervals. This leads to 9X more efficient recovery being able to bring Oracle back to a closer point in time before a disaster for faster, more accurate recovery.
