1 Notes: l’Imparfait français III

2 You already know that there is a past tense in French called the passé composé.

3 This tense is used to descibe what happened and what took place.

4 In English, most of these verbs would have an –ed ending.

5 There is another past tense in French that is called the Imparfait tense.

6 You can remember the uses by the acronym TOWARDU:

7 TIME Il était trois heures. It was three o’clock.

8 ONGOING Je regardais la télé. I was watching TV.

9 WEATHER Il faisait chaud. It was hot.

10 AGE J’avais treize ans. I was thirteen.

11 REPEATED ACTIONS Chaque lundi, je faisais du karate.
Every Monday, I used to do karate.

12 DESCRIPTIONS La fille était blonde et jeune.
The girl was blonde and young.

13 USED TO (do/be) J’ étais sportif pendant mon enfance
USED TO (do/be) J’ étais sportif pendant mon enfance. Je jouais à 4 sports. I used to be athletic during childhood. I used to play 4 sports.

14 To form the Imparfait tense, there is a three-step formula:

15 1. Start with the present- tense form of the subject pronoun « NOUS »

16 2. Drop the -ons

17 3. Add the following endings:

18 Je ais Nous ions Tu ais Vous iez Il/Elle/On ait Ils/Elles aient

20 “London Bridge” is a song that might help you remember the endings

21 For example, to conjugate « DANSER » in the ILS form, you :

22 1. Find the present-tense « nous » form of DANSER = dansons

23 2. Drop the –ons = dans

24 3. Add the ending for the subject pronoun « ils » = dans + aient

25 4. You get the complete sentence : Ils dansaient
4. You get the complete sentence : Ils dansaient ! (They were dancing OR They used to dance.)

29   *Note : There is only ONE verb that does not follow the process described above to form the imparfait tense.

30 That verb is ETRE and its stem is –ét

31 Can you guess why?!

32 Exemple : J’étais = I was/I used to be Vous étiez = You were/You used to be
