2 Some verbs take être instead of avoir in the past tense

3 Some verbs take être instead of avoir in the past tense
retourné (returned) rentré (returned) revenu (came back) né (born) sorti (went out) tombé (fell) mort (died) descendu (went down) je suis tu es Il/elle est Nous sommes Vous êtes Ils/elles sont

4 How do you know which ones take avoir and which take être?
There are two ways to remember: MR VANS TRAMPED OR LEARN THEM IN GROUPS

9 Remember … With the verbs that take être only…
The past participle must agree with the person who is doing the action. Add an S if there is more than one person. Nous sommes allés Add an E if a female is doing the action. Elle est allée Add both E and S if it is a group of females Elles sont allées
