To give commands and make suggestions

In order to form the imperative in French, you simply use the tu or vous form of the verb in the present tense without the subject in front of it. You use the tu form for one person and informal situations and the vous form for more than one person and formal situations. Exception: In the tu form of -er verbs you leave off the -s.

INFORMALFORMAL OR PLURAL Fais le plein! Mets de l’huile dans le moteur! Vérifie les freins! Faites le plein! Mettez de l’huile dans le moteur! Vérifiez les freins!

In order to makes suggestions of what you should do, use the nous form of the verb without the subject. Allons à Bruxelles! Faisons la vidange!

If it is negative, put ne pas around the verb as always: Ne fais pas le plein! Ne vérifiez pas les freins!

AFFIRMATIFNÉGATIF With reflexives you need a hyphen (-) plus the word toi,vous or nous afterwards. Grouille-toi! Grouillez-vous! Dépêchons-nous! If it is negative, the order switches to: ne + (te, vous, nous) + verb + pas. Ne te grouille pas! Ne nous dépêchons pas!

Finally, être is irregular! (Quelle surprise!) Sois patient! Soyez gentil! Soyons sympas!
