3 ISIISI 3 Usability Glossary: adaptive interfaces Adaptive user interfaces are interfaces that change over time, in response to how they are used, to improve the quality of the interaction. Adaptive systems also include those that detect common user tasks and make these tasks more accessible. Any adaptive interface has, at some level of detail, a model of the user's behavior that is refined, and provides an interaction that fits the behavior as best as it can. 4 ISIISI 4 Présentation dADAPTS Modern interactive electronic technical manuals (IETM) provide a wealth of information about a system: how it is constructed, operates, and what do in a case of each particular problem. The focus of the ADAPTS, an Electronic Performance Support System for maintenance technicians integrates adaptive guidance from diagnostics systems with adaptive access to technical information, thus supporting both sides of the process: what-to-do and how-to-do it.

6 ISIISI 6 Problématique The amount of potentially relevant information could be very big and its a serious challenge for a technician to find the information that is most suitable to his experience and context of work. Dynamic assessment of the technicians knowledge, experience, preferences, and work context is the focus of ADAPTS. ADAPTS accepts real-time inputs from the Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) system, then plans a course of Action. The strategy is dynamically adjusted as the technician interacts with the user interface.

8 ISIISI 8 Adaptivité: modèles utilisateurs The core of user modeling approach in ADAPTS is estimating technicians experience with system tasks and components of various levels – from subsystems to addressable units. The experience is calculated from various evidences of user experience collected by the system. To maximize the user modeling power ADAPTS uses a multi-aspect overlay user model. The user model independently accumulates several aspects (roles) of the experience and knowledge of each technician for each component or task. In total, there are 12 aspects for evaluating user experience with components and 8 aspects for evaluating user experience with tasks.
