Some of the exercises are in groups – work sensibly – it is the real thing this afternoon, three or four extra marks gained this morning really could make a grade difference this afternoon. Pay careful attention to the advice on using the 5 minutes reading time – this too can be very useful. Revision Programme Most of this morning will focus on the Listening Paper – with an emphasis on groups of words and specific tricky vocabulary but a lot of what you do will also help with the Reading on Thursday. Some of the exercises are in groups – work sensibly – it is the real thing this afternoon, three or four extra marks gained this morning really could make a grade difference this afternoon. Pay careful attention to the advice on using the 5 minutes reading time – this too can be very useful.

Write clearly: the papers are scanned and marked by non –specialists. If it can’t be read it will be marked as wrong. Have a pencil as well as your pen this can be used to highlight important things on the paper….. More about this in the next few slides…….

Underline question words e.g. WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, HOW, HOW MANY… Underline the mark allocations (1), (2), (3) Anticipate what words might come up and write them into the blank spaces on the paper. It’s your paper. * the option which looks most likely if you have to guess… this will help make guesses intelligent ones!

Look out for these questions – you must answer BOTH parts from what you hear

Draw a line in the margin to remind you that it is a double answer. You will also notice a longer gap on the recording. So far these have only appeared on the HIGHER paper. But look on FOUNDATION just in case.

And use the example When given a choice of words to put into gaps, cross out the ones you use as you go – pencil only! Use clues the texts give away – what gender of noun? What’s the subject/ending on the verb? Are there any clues of tense?

When you hear the words, write the KEY words on the exam paper, e.g. soixante-cinq

Don’t panic if there are a lot of words you don’t understand, especially on the harder questions at the end Pick out key words you do know Watch out for negatives : pas – not rien – nothing jamais – never personne – nobody/no one

Whatever happens, don’t leave any gaps !!! It is much better to guess, even with the longer written answers as you won’t get marked down for an incorrect answer. Millie – went from a D to a C just by filling in the gaps with guesses.

In the text you have to listen to or read there will be words which you will be expected to know. They will not be the same words which crop up in the questions on the paper, but they will be linked in some way, either they will be synonyms or they will be related in meaning.

Use past papers! Use past papers and specimen papers from your own but also other exam boards. All the past papers can be downloaded from the school website. Do them, and find the mark scheme online and mark them.

Use the transcript Some exam boards provide the transcripts to go with its papers. Have a look around on their websites. The BBC provides the transcripts for its activities and these are free.
