Memory and Recall skills in GCSE Languages S. Barfoot (Redhill),

Warm-up Activity O Celebrity Images 15 celebrities are going to come up on the screen – how many can you remember at the end? YOU MAY NOT MAKE ANY NOTES!!!!

So, how many can you remember?

1. Daniel Craig (James Bond) 2. Cherly Cole 3. Andy Murray 4. Olly Murs 5. Nicki Minaj 6. One Direction 7. Jessica Ennis 8. Rihanna 9. Ronaldo 10. Homer Simpson 11. Barack Obama 12. Nelson Mandela 13. Prince Harry 14. Postman Pat 15. David Beckham

Think about the ones you found easy and hard to remember….. Was it… easier to remember the first and last ones? 2...easier to remember the ones that MEAN something to you? 3...easier to remember the ones that you LOVE or HATE i.e. have a strong reaction to?? 4. Would it have been easier if you had looked at them for longer or more frequently?

Memory and the GCSE mark scheme Listening20% Reading20% Speaking30% Writing30% memorise key details from writing and speaking preparation and recall from 40 key words memorise and recall vocabulary from all your topic areas

Key things to remember O Break text down into small chunks – break. paragraphs down into bullet pointed sentences. O Always learn somewhere quiet, without music or distractions. O Try to speak aloud whenever you can then you are engaging your auditory memory too. O Get someone else to test you when you have learnt a chunk of text. O Create a timetable for learning chunks of text, tick it off as you go and reward yourself for learning it. O Meaning matters – think about intonation too

What NOT to do…. O Don’t just read it over and over and expect it to go in – only very lucky people can do this!! O If the method you are using is not working, don’t just keep going – if it isn’t working you need to try something new. O Don’t be scared to experiment and adapt things to suit YOUR needs – if it works for you, its right! O Don’t be scared to tell your teacher if you are struggling – the earlier the better! O Don’t ignore what works for you in other subjects e.g. using ICT / cue cards / group revision

Memorisation Method 1 Method 1: Initials method Take the first few lines of your text and use the first letter of each word followed by a line to represent the length of the word that follows e.g. Ma mère est très sympa M__ m____ e__ t___ s_______

J‘______ m_ v___, c___ i_ y a b________ à f_______. J‘______ l_ p___ e_ l_ c_____ s_______, p____ q___ j_ s___ t___ s________ Q_____ j_ v___ a_ p___, j_ j___ a_ t_______ o_ a_ f___ a___ m__ c_______.

J‘______ __ ____, ____ i_ y a _________ _ _______. J‘______ __ p___ __ __ ______ s_______, p____ q___ __ ____ ____ _________ Q_____ __ ____ __ ____, __ ____ __ t_______ __ __ ____ a___ ___ c_______.

Memorisation Method 2 Method 2: Using images Use pictures to prompt your memory of the text. The funnier and more memorable the images, the more effective they will be. N.B. this is ONLY a revision aid and pictures cannot be used in the test.

Memorisation Method 3 Method 3: Folding prompt sheet

Folding prompt sheet method – Step 1 – break up the text into bullet points

Folding prompt sheet method – Step 2 – create cues 1. Use the Look / Cover / Read method (aloud!!) to try to learn sentence Highlight the words you get stuck on / hesitate over and write them into the right hand margin. 3. Test yourself by folding the paper so all you can see are the cues. 4. Gradually reduce the cues as you progress

Folding prompt sheet method – Step 3 – practice makes perfect 1. Test yourself by folding the paper so all you can see are the cues. 2. Gradually reduce the cues as you progress 3. Get someone else to test you by holding the paper up for them to read but you can just see the cues. Don’t be scared to alter the cues if they are not working!!

Memorisation Method 4 Method 4: Roman Room Method O Actors use this method to learn lines – Romans used to use it as they could not write lists etc. O The idea is to associate your text with a place or object on a ‘journey’ O During the test you visualise the journey and remember the text.

Chunk 1 Chunk 5 Chunk 4 Chunk 3Chunk 2 Chunk 6

Memorisation Method 5 Method 5: Translation method O Translate your text into English and use the English text as a prompt alongside the French/German O Gradually reduce the English words and cover the French/German as you learnt it.

Next yèar will go to Berlin with my schoòl. We will stay in a hostel of youth very good valué. I think that įt will be great. On the secònd day we will we do a trip of boat I will eat a lot because I love the food frenche

REVIEW How much of all your text can you now remember? Which method do you think you would use to learn your Controlled Assessment? Would you use a mixture perhaps? How much time do you think you would need to devote to learning 4 minutes worth of language? Could you use these methods to learn vocab too?

Plan Where are you going to learn your CA? At what time of day are you going to learn it? Who is going to help you? When are you going to start?
