o Commissioned by Napoleon in 1806 to honor his wartime victories. o The four huge relief sculptures at the bases of the four pillars commemorate: o The Triumph of 1810 o Resistance o Peace o The Departure of the Volunteers (La Marseillaise) o Beneath the arch is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the eternal flame commemorating the dead of the two world wars.
o Richest art museum in the world o Home of the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo, and Winged Victory o Through time it has been: o a fortress o a palace o a prison o and now an art museum. o I.M. Pei, an American, is the architect of the glass pyramid outside the museum.
