THE WATER IN THE CITY

About 2000 years ago, when the Romans came to Paris, they found a small village near the river Seine with many ponds. They called it LUTECE probably because it means ‘mood’ in Latin.

Romans wanted very much clean water so they built an aqueduct for their Thermes, villas and palaces Les Romains voulaient beaucoup d’eau pour leur Thermes, villas et palais.

During the Middle Age, the Roman aqueduct was abandoned but some monks found how to bring the water from a source up to the hill of Belleville to Paris for their hospital. The King Philip August built some fountains with that water. The most ancient fontaine in Paris is the Maubouée.

Here is the 4 seasons fountain called by the Parisians “The foolish fountain”because it was a big monument but it provides few water.

Some people did the ‘water carriers’: it was a job until about 100 years ago in Paris! It seems they use to drink only wine!

The Fontain of the Innocent was built near a cimitery: drinking that water was very dangerous. People who drinked it would go to...the cimitery then!

In 1870 Sir Wallace drew and gave about 50 public fountains to the Parisians, called ‘the 4 women pub’.

We go to a tresure hunting: who can find a Wallace fountain near our street?
