What are Indirect Objects?: Indirect objects are the people in a sentence “to” or “for whom” the action of the verb occurs. In French, these pronouns replace à + nouns representing PEOPLE

What are Indirect Objects?: Ex. I’m talking to Marie— Ask the question: “To whom am I talking?” Marie (indirect object) Je parle à Marie

POSITION BEFORE In French, object pronouns come directly BEFORE the verb. I spoke to you Je TE parle. I did not speak to you. Je ne TE parle pas.

NEGATION When the sentence includes a pronoun and negation, the pronoun is placed in front of the auxiliary verb, and then the negative structure surrounds that pair: Subject + ne + pronoun(s) + auxiliary verb + negative word + past participle. I didn’t like spiders: Je ne les ai pas aimés.

EXAMPLES I’m talking to him. Je lui parle. He buys books for them. Il leur achète des livres. You did not swim to her. Tu ne lui as pas nagé.
