Direct Object Pronouns Pronouns are used to replace a noun, so you don’t have to repeat the same word He likes cookies. He eats them often. DIRECT OBJECTS ANSWER THE QUESTION WHAT? or WHO? AFTER the verb. In English, pronouns mean: Him - Her -It - Them

Direct Object Pronouns In English, pronouns are placed AFTER the verb. He adores bananas. He adores them. In French, pronouns are placed BEFORE the verb. Il adore les bananes. Il les adore.

LE Le replaces a masculine, singular object/person I see the elephant. I see it. Je vois l’éléphant. Je le vois. She sees the boy. She sees him. Elle voit le garçon. Elle le voit. In English, LE means HIM or IT

LA La replaces a feminine, singular object/person We see the turtle. We see it. Je vois la tortue. Je la vois. He hates that girl. He hates her. Il déteste cette fille. Il la déteste. In English, LA means HER or IT

L’ L’ replaces a masculine or feminine, singular object/person before a vowel He buys his lunch. He buys it. Il achète son déjeuner. Il l’achète. He likes that girl. He likes her. Il adore la fille. Il l’adore. In English, L’ means HIM or HER or IT

LES Les replaces a masculine or feminine, PLURAL object/person. We watch movies. We watch them. Nous regardons les films. Nous les regardons. They look at the girls. They look at them. Ils regardent les filles. Ils les regardent. In English, Les means THEM

Pronoun Rules Pronouns are placed BEFORE the verb. Elle les adore. Il la mange. 2. In the negative, the pronoun stays beside the verb, with NE PAS on either side Elle ne les adore pas. Il ne la mange pas. The same applies in the futur simple. IT IS ONE VERB IDEA. Elle les adorera. Il ne la mangera pas. With 2 verbs, the pronoun goes before verb #2 (the infinitive) Il veut la manger. Il ne veut pas la manger. Au passé composé… the pronoun goes BEFORE the AVOIR or ETRE Le film? Il l’a vu. Il ne l’a pas vu.

LEUR Leur replaces à + 2+ personnes. I talk to my friends. I talk to them. Je parle à mes amies. Je leur parle. We phone our friends. We phone (to) them. Nous ne disons pas les mensonges à nos amies. Nous ne leur disons pas les mensonges. In English, LEUR means TO THEM
