Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change Made with input from NDACC PIs and members of the NDACC Steering Committee Organization Ground-Based Network Past Changes in the Vertical O3 Distribution The SI2N (SPARC/IO3C/IGACO-O3/NDACC) activity was established to assess past changes in the vertical distribution of ozone. This activity was a joint effort of the SPARC project (Stratospheric and Tropospheric Processes and their Role in Climate), of the International Ozone Commission, of the WMO/GAW activity IGACO-O3/UV and NDACC. NDACC lidar data contributed substantially to this activity. The aim of the SI2N activity was to answer these questions: What happened to the vertical distribution of stratospheric ozone globally and in different regions, over the last 40 years? Is there any evidence of ozone ‘recovery’? Towards Operational Applications Observational Capability Chart Long-Term Time Series of O3 and HCl Stratospheric relative difference profiles between the CAMS operational model (osuite) and MWR ozone observations at Ny-Ålesund (left) and Bern (right). In September 2014 the osuite model was updated from ECMWF’s IFS coupled to Mozart towards CIFS-TM5. Evolution of Ozone over Lauder, New Zealand Annual average ozone anomalies at 10 hPa (30km for SAGE II) shown 4-times annually (with annual averages for each instrument taken from January to December, April to March, July to June, and October to September). Results are shown for SAGE II (light blue), HALOE (brown), UARS and Aura MLS (both orange), and MOPI1 (dark blue). Satellite measurements (latitudinal averages from 40°S to 50°S) have been offset so that the average ozone matches that of MOPI1 during the period of coincidence. Comparison of UVVIS MAXDOAS NO2 tropospheric columns against the CAMS osuite model (orange, with OMI assimilation) and the CAMS control model (blue, without assimilation) Evolution of HCl in the Earth’s Atmosphere a: The long-term total column time series of HCl at Jungfraujoch (running average with a 3-yr integration length, step of 1month; in red, left scale) and the global total tropospheric chlorine volume mixing ratio (blue curve, right scale, in parts per trillion, p.p.t). The lower panels display the running average total column time series (1997–2011) of HCl at Ny-Ålesund (b), Jungfraujoch (c) and Lauder (d), derived from the NDACC–FTIR observations, and the standard (green) and S2000 (dark yellow) SLIMCAT simulations. The thin red lines correspond to the ±2 standard error of the mean range. Minimum columns are observed in July 2007 at the Northern Hemisphere sites (dashed lines). The NDACC Steering Committee has developed a graphic to depict the measurement capabilities of the network. The chart provides a summary of the species and parameters whose measurements are archived in the DHF, the instrumental techniques employed for the measurements, and an indication of the approximate vertical resolution of the measurements. The EU FP7 NORS project demonstrated the use of NDACC data for contributing to the validation of the Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service (CAMS). Consequently, NDACC is now established as a contributing network to the Copernicus in situ component. This requires rapid delivery (RD) of the data in the GEOMS HDF format, within one month after data acquisition. A dedicated directory in the NDACC DHF is available for submission of these RD data. Candidate NDACC data are also accepted in this repository. Automatically generated validation reports can be consulted at http://nors-server.aeronomie.be/report/.
