The concept of psychopathy has been widely the target of validation studies concerning its factor structure. However less factor structure studies have been conducted among forensic patients. This study addresses the factor structure of the PCL-R (Hare 2003) among a French European population.

Method Participants The sample includes male adult prison inmates from forensic patients from a security hospital. Inside the Social Defense Law System. Analyses We used the M Plus program for conducting confirmatory factor analyses. We conducted separate analyses for the prison and the forensic sample. The analyses considered only complete data.

Discussion Concerning the four facets of model of psychopathy (Neumann and Hare, 2007), separate analyzes suggested that CFA indexes including Chi-Square, CFI and RMSEA presented a rather good fit among both the prison and the forensic populations.

Discussion Among the forensic population, the lowest correlation between the 4 facets was .49 (F2 with F4) and the highest was .80 (F3 with F4). The lowest correlation was .39 (F2 with F4) and the highest was .93 (F3 and F4) for the prison population. Concerning the three factors model (Cooke & Michie, 2001), separate analyzes suggested that for both the forensic and prison data, the Chi Square is higher than the value of 2 recommended (Tabachnik and Fidell, 2006).

Discussion Among the forensic population, the lowest correlation between the three factors was .59 (F1 with F3) and the highest was .66 (F2 with F3). Among the prison population, the lowest correlation was .64 (F1 with F3) and the highest was .79 (F1 and F2).

Discussion One important limitation concerned the small sample-in particular for the four facets model- with comparison to the international literature. The overall CFA indexes suggested a rather good fit for both models of psychopathy. The results are encouraging for the implementation of the psychopathy, as measured by the PCL-R.

La comorbidité a des conséquences sur le plan thérapeutique et criminologique : Les patients atteints d’un trouble mental majeur répondent plus difficilement au traitement lorsqu’ils présentent un trouble de la personnalité associé (Pfohl et al., 1984 ; Frank et al., 1987 ; Reich, 1988 ; Reich et Vasile, 1993 ; Skodol, Oldham et Gallagher, 1999 ; Tyrer, Gunderson, Lyons et Tohen, 1997). Corrélation entre le nombre de diagnostics et le risque de comportements violents (Swanson et al., 1990 ; Côté et Hodgins, 1990 ; Krakowski, Volavka et Brizer, 1986). 36 36

Comorbidité et loi de Défense Sociale Le phénomène de comorbidité est très fréquent sur la population de Défense Sociale. Presque la moitié présente une comorbidité entre troubles mentaux majeurs et troubles de la personnalité (problème cloisonnement). L’examen des expertises psychiatriques révèle une approche diagnostique basée sur l’analyse d’un trouble mental majeur sans que ce dernier ne soit articulé à un éventuel trouble de la personnalité.
