87% How many of you here know someone with a chronic illness, like cancer, heart disease, diabetes or ALS? Please raise your hands. The reality is that 87% of Canadians will most likely be affected by chronic disease or major illness in their lifetime. So the family member or friend or work colleague who came to your mind when I asked my question is one of millions of Canadians coping with this challenge. And what’s more important, is that Canadians suffering from chronic disease or major illness are more prone to mental illness than the general population. This body-mind link is so close that we can even think of mental illness as a side effect of chronic disease. Consider the facts: Up to 50% of people living with a chronic illness will also suffer from depression. One in five Canadians will be affected by mental illness. 3 million Canadians will experience depression at one point in their lives. And every day, 500,000 employees are absent from work because of depression – costing our national economy more than $51-billion annually.
