Good morning ladies and gentlemen, I’m glad to have this opportunity to address such a distinguished audience. My name is Timoumi Ryhab, i’am student in accounting at the university of management in Sousse. The purpose of my presentation is to introduce our new range of « idea of progress » through the example of robots. My talk is divided into three parts : to start I’ll give a definition of idea of progress. Then I’ll mention some of advantages of progress and I’ll show some examples after that i will explain some bad effects of the progress and finally I’ll summarize my presentation before concluding with some recommandations. To explain my presentation, i will focus on the interview of Kevin Warwick and on the film « I ROBOT ». I’ll be glad to answer any question you may have after the presentation. Now let’s move on to the first part of may talk, which is giving a definition of idea of progress. Progress is a movement forwards. Then, the idea of progress is the idea that human condition can become increasingly better thanks to various advances in science, technology and social organization. However, the idea of Progress is still subject to debate between those consider that it's beneficial and those who think it's harmful.
Now I’d like to mention the advantage of idea of progress. First of all, History is full of progress and evolution that have allowed the world to be what it is today. Indeed, thanks to breakthrough in science, our conditions of life are better and medecine has become more efficient and accessible. For instance, Kevin Warwick a wheeled professor of cybernetics in "my body, my laboratory" explained how he carried out an experimnent on himself to figure out the interaction between man and machine. The aim was to see if a human being could respond to stimuli generated by a computer thanks to a silico chip in his arm. It was successful because by the implant, Warwick was able to control an electric chair just by his thoughts. So, Kevin Warwick was enhanced with electronics implants. Consequently that article excerpt of the Time underlines that progress in robotics cand find applications in medical field. It could help patients whose nervous system is damaged or disabled people by enhanced prosthesis for instance. Ok, finally I’d like to turn to the most important point : the drawbacks of idea of progress. However, there are some reasons to be affraid of progress specially in robotic field. Indeed robots and machines become more and more intelligent. In other word, they could become out of control. For this reason, Isaac Asimov have written the Three Law of Robotics wich prevent robots to harm a human being. This is illustrate with the dystopian american film "I Robot" directed by Alex Proyas where robots have been produced to serve humanity. Althought the only aim of robots it is to improve the quality of life for everyone, it also lead to humanity's downfall. As a result, human being could be subservient to machine.
Finally, even if this actually science-fiction, it could become a science fact in the future. Indeed cloning people have become possible nowdays whereas in the past, it was only a dream ! So, to sum up, i have talked about three main areas : first the meaning of idea of progress, Secod the main advantages of a movment forwards and third the effects on the world. To deal of progress, Irecommand humans to avoid domination and evolution. it's necessary to feel that is not the centre of life and everything also one should not give up on the manual things and do not compensate them with anything electrical. Thank you for your attention … are they any questions ?
