In French we have 3 different groups of verbs, verbs belong to a group depending on their endings in the infinitive. Once a verb is in a group it does like all the other verbs in that group. What is the infinitive of a verb? Yes, it is the form of the verb which does not have any meaning of time (past, present, future) or does not indicate who does the action (person or subject of the verb)

The infinitive of a verb in English is quite easy The infinitive of a verb in English is quite easy. It is the form of the verb which you will find in a dictionary and always has TO in front of it: to play to draw to jump to do How do we know if a word is a verb in a dictionary? Next to the word you will find the letter v for verb. Using a dictionary find two other verbs in French.

What can you see about their endings? Yes, some end in –ER, some in –IR and some in –RE. What do you think these endings mean? They mean that the verb is in the infinitive. In fact –ER, -IR and –RE are the equivalent of TO.

Now what are the words in red in the following sentences: Je dessine. Quel âge as-tu? J’ai trois ans. Yes, they are personal pronouns and they act as subject (they do the action).

PERSONAL PRONOUNS SUBJECT Je / J’ I Tu You (one person, friendly) Il He Elle She Nous We Vous You (more than one, one person when polite) Ils They (male) Elles They (female)
