Energy Performance Analysis: Winter Season UCD Training February 28, 2019

Performance Analysis: Winter Season Purpose Use simple indicator to study consumption over cold weather months and identify poor performing facilities in winter Indicator compares energy performance with a ratio-based weather normalizing method over a specific period of time Rationale When cold weather-induced consumption is removed, high energy consumption during the winter months is more apparent Works with both electric and natural gas heating

Weather Normalization - Brief Background Assumes that energy consumption is materially influenced by factors such as weather Energy consumption required to heat a building is relatively proportional to the number of Heating Degree Days (HDD) over that period Correlates monthly energy consumption data with monthly HDD HDD are determined using a balance point, or base temperature, which is the outside temperature below which the building needs heating Typically graphed with HDD on the x-axis and consumption on the y-axis Once plotted, the regression line is the straight line that best fits through the points in the scatter chart. This line describes the model for that meter. Estimated baseload is where the regression line crosses the y-axis Represents a ratio-based (consumption/degree-days) weather normalization method

Weather Normalization - Brief Linear regression – line is the model used for that meter Baseload

Performance Analysis: Winter Season Methodology Uses energy consumption data and HDD from November 1 to April 30 of the school year Creates an energy intensity value for that period Removes effect of weather by dividing intensity value by HDD Resulting indicator ratio is used to compare schools Utilizes the following data from the UCD Utility consumption and floor areas Sources: Board Profile (EDU01) (Raw), Utility Consumption (EUC01) HDD from weather stations used in UCD Source: Weather Station Degree Days file – MEC_EDU - Documents

Performance Analysis: Winter Season Weather Station Degree Days file – screenshot

Performance Analysis: Winter Season What’s Needed From the UCD Board Profile (EDU01) Date Range: FY 20XX Normalization: Raw Go to Tab: Asset List Note Raw data is used as you will be doing simple weather normalization using degree days in the indicator For this demo we are using m3 for natural gas and converting to ekWh

Performance Analysis: Winter Season Steps In Asset List tab, remove all columns except for the five shown below If propane, fuel oil or district heating is used to heat any facilities, keep these columns School Name / Nom de l'école Total Building Area (includes portables and portapaks) / Superficie totale du bâtiment (comprend les salles de classe préfabriquées et ajout modulaire) (ft²) Total Electricity Consumed / Consommation totale d'électricité (kWh) Total Natural Gas Consumed / Consommation totale de gaz naturel (m³) Total Propane Consumed / Consommation totale de propane (L)

Performance Analysis: Winter Season Steps Add new columns as highlighted below: School Name / Nom de l'école Total Building Area (includes portables and portapaks) / Superficie totale du bâtiment (comprend les salles de classe préfabriquées et ajout modulaire) (ft²) Total Electricity Consumed / Consommation totale d'électricité (kWh) Total Natural Gas Consumed / Consommation totale de gaz naturel (m³) Total Propane Consumed / Consommation totale de propane (L) Nov-Apr Electricity Use (kWh) Nov-Apr Electricity Adjusted Use (kWh) Nov-Apr Natural Gas Use (m³) Nov-Apr Propane Use (L) Nov-Apr Total Energy Use (ekWh) HDD Winter Intensity (ekWh/ft2/ HDDx1000)

Performance Analysis: Winter Season Copy and paste the Nov-Apr consumption data From the UCD: Under Facility Tree select the school for analysis Under the Exports tab, select the report: Utility Consumption (EUC01) Date Range: Fiscal Year 20XX Note: This report is used since it has consumption data normalized by calendar month

Performance Analysis: Winter Season Electricity tab Highlight electricity consumption values from November to April Create sum total for these 6 months Copy total to worksheet column Nov-Apr Electricity Use

Performance Analysis: Winter Season Natural Gas tab Highlight gas consumption values from November to April Create sum total for these 6 months Copy total value to worksheet column Nov-Apr Natural Gas Use

Performance Analysis: Winter Season If other fuels exist, repeat process for each fuel tab This process must be repeated for each and every school that will be part of the analysis

Performance Analysis: Winter Season Completing Column Nov-Apr Electricity Adjusted Use (kWh) This column removes the baseload electricity use from the Nov-Apr value Enter electricity use value from the Nov-Apr total (slide 10) in column B Insert formula into Nov-Apr Electricity Adjusted Use (kWh) column cells (C): C = B – (A – B) School Name / Nom de l'école Total Building Area (includes portables and portapaks) / Superficie totale du bâtiment (comprend les salles de classe préfabriquées et ajout modulaire) (ft²) Total Electricity Consumed / Consommation totale d'électricité (kWh) Total Natural Gas Consumed / Consommation totale de gaz naturel (m³) Total Propane Consumed / Consommation totale de propane (L) Nov-Apr Electricity Use (kWh) Nov-Apr Electricity Adjusted Use (kWh) Nov-Apr Natural Gas Use (m³) Nov-Apr Propane Use (L) Nov-Apr Total Energy Use (ekWh) HDD Winter Intensity (ekWh/ft2/ HDDx1000) ABC elementary 25,640 398,456.00 37,986.00   266,500.00 134,544.00 A B C

Performance Analysis: Winter Season Completing Column Nov-Apr Total Energy Use (ekWh) Note the units in ekWh. If natural gas is in m3, multiply m3 value by 10.32 to get ekWh. Apply the conversion factors for any other types of heating fuel used as applicable. Insert formula into Nov-Apr Total Energy Use (ekWh) column cells (F): F = C + D * 10.32 + E * conversion factor School Name / Nom de l'école Total Building Area (includes portables and portapaks) / Superficie totale du bâtiment (comprend les salles de classe préfabriquées et ajout modulaire) (ft²) Total Electricity Consumed / Consommation totale d'électricité (kWh) Total Natural Gas Consumed / Consommation totale de gaz naturel (m³) Total Propane Consumed / Consommation totale de propane (L) Nov-Apr Electricity Use (kWh) Nov-Apr Electricity Adjusted Use (kWh) Nov-Apr Natural Gas Use (m³) Nov-Apr Propane Use (L) Nov-Apr Total Energy Use (ekWh) HDD Winter Intensity (ekWh/ft2/ HDDx1000) ABC elementary 25,640 398,456.00 37,986.00   266,500.00 134,544.00 32,114.37 467,248.87 A B C D E F
