There there there …. the pronoun ‘y’

What is it all about ? The pronoun ‘y’ is an INDIRECT OBJECT PRONOUN. It means ‘there’. It is used to replace ‘a place’ which has already been indicated previously in the text or conversation. Tu vas à la fête ? – Oui, j’y vais (y = à la fête). J’aime aller à la plage. J’y vais souvent (à la plage). Nous partons en France. Nous y partons la semaine prochaine (y = en France).

Where does the pronoun ‘y’ go ? Like all the other pronouns we’ve looked at, ‘y’ goes after the subject pronoun and before the main verb or auxiliary verb. So… Present tense: J’y vais - I go there Il y part demain - he leaves for there tomorrow Past (Perfect) tense: J’y suis allé(e) - I went there Nous y avons visité hier – we visited there yesterday

For the ‘near’ future tense and compound verbs in the present tense. Except….. For the ‘near’ future tense and compound verbs in the present tense. Near Future: Je vais partir en France - je vais y aller demain On va louer un appartement ici – on va y rester une semaine Compound Verbs: On peut aller aux magasins – On peut y aller maintenant Nous voulons visiter la gare – nous voulons y visiter lundi J’aime aller à Dunedin – J’aime y aller.

… try these. Replace the ‘place’ with ‘y’ Je vais aller en France. Nous pouvons aller au château. Tu vas en ville ? Ils vont à Rome en train Il veut rester à Christchurch. Elle aime manger en ville. Il est allé à la gare. Vas - tu aller au Canada ? Vous avez mangé au Quick. Je vais y aller. Nous pouvons y aller. Tu y vas ? Ils y vont en train. Il veut y rester. Elle aime y manger. Il y est allé. Vas – tu y aller ? Vous y avez mangé.

Well done !
