General theme Plurality of science for interdisciplinarity and policy making. Theoretical findings from analyses of sustainable development in agriculture. Editors: Françoise Burel, Bruno Tinel, Nicky Allsop, Catherine Laurent

In the first part of the book an analysis of the concept of discipline, and how it appeared shows that most of the time it is perceived as a black box masking its internal heterogeneity. In the second part, we show how the notion of “research programmes” (Lakatos) can be useful in opening the black boxes in the disciplines of economy and ecology. In the third part we use the notion of “scientific facts” (Fleck) to analyse the definition and use of a nomadic concept: biodiversity. In the last part, two chapters show the negative impact of neglecting plurality of science, and how use of research programmes and heterogeneity of scientific facts could help to design alternative practices. To conclude, we will show that disciplines have different levels of proof which renders the link with action still more complex
