Aims To learn about Shrove Tuesday and Mardi Gras in France To learn about the ingredients in crêpes To use imperative verbs to make a crêpe To discover crêpe toppings

Why do we eat pancakes on Shrove Tuesday?

Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday". The name comes from the ancient custom of parading a fat ox through Paris on this day. The ox was to remind the people that they were not allowed to eat meat during Lent. Lent runs from Ash Wednesday (13 th Feb 2015) thru Easter Sunday.Easter Mardi Gras moves. It can be anywhere between February 3rd and March 9th. The date depends on when Easter falls.

Mardi Gras parades happen throughout the world. Some of the most famous celebrations are held in Nice (France), Cologne (Germany), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) Binche (Belgium) New Orleans French Quarter - (USA) The Tuesday that Mardi Gras falls on is also known as Shrove Tuesday. The name comes from the custom of confessing on the day before lent. Shrove means "to be forgiven one's sins."

La Chandeleur = Candlemas = 2 nd February. This is the main date when pancakes are eaten in France. les-cr-pes/1732.html Mardi gras = “Fat Tuesday” = Shrove Tuesday Also known as “carneval” – rather than preparing for Lent by eating pancakes, this is a big party with fancy dress and parades.

Watch the following video and note down in English, the different things you see in the carnival.

Traditions King Cakes are large, round cinnamon rolls covered with white icing and sprinkled with the Mardi Gras colours. A plastic baby the size of an almond is hidden inside. Whoever finds the baby is the next king or queen and must host the next King Cake party.

Mardi Gras is all about green, purple, gold, sparkle, beads, masks and noise! GREEN! symbolises FAITH GOLD!symbolises POWER! PURPLE! symbolises JUSTICE!

Doubloons, is name of old Spanish gold coins. They are decorated with the logos of the different Krewes (the team of people who organise the carnivals). During the carnivals, they are tossed out to the spectators. They are said to bring good luck if you catch one. More Traditions
