Cultural Comparison

1 minute for directions (in English and French, spoken consecutively): You will make an oral presentation to your class on a specific topic. You will have 4 minutes to read the topic and prepare your presentation. Then you will have 2 minutes to record your presentation. In your presentation, compare your own community to an area of the French-speaking world with which you are familiar. You should demonstrate your understanding of cultural features of the French-speaking world. You should also organize your presentation clearly.

Stimulus: There is no stimulus, only a prompt. The goals of this task are for the students to speak first about themselves and their communities (the C1) and then speak of an area of the French-speaking world (the C2) about which they’ve learned something or have some personal experience (using comparison). Students are encouraged to cite examples from materials they’ve read, viewed, and listened to, personal experiences and observations.

Remember! : You have 1 minute to read the instructions and 4 minutes to prep your presentation Read the prompt carefully! You need to understand what to address in your response! Make notes but don’t write full-length sentences Use consistent framework of verb tenses Use transition words!

You must speak for 2 minutes about the topic! Speak about: YOUR personal connection to the topic YOUR culture (the C1) in regards to the subject The C2’s perspective on the topic Think about the 3 P’s: Produits, Pratiques, Perspectives Talk about the ATTITUDE of the C1 v. the C2 (French/Canadian/Other) in regards to the subject.

Watch the clock and try to arrive at your conclusion by the end of the 2 minutes Speak clearly and enunciate. Speaking quickly is NOT a sign of fluency! Correct yourself if you make a mistake Don’t stop talking until you are cut off!
