2 Importance of Standards The basic operating principle of Infoway, and its key to success is LEVERAGE, which depends on our joint ability: –To exploit existing commercial off-the-shelf solutions where possible –To ensure that what we build in one location can be used by others across the country –To ensure that what we build today will inter-operate with what we build tomorrow –To consolidate our fragmented marketplace into a vibrant 30 million person marketplace that will excite vendors attention Underlying these fundamental principles is Standards Without standards we have a collection of expensive standalone solutions that do not support one another, and do not contribute to a more sustainable, integrated healthcare system

3 Standards-based Solutions Why Standards? They facilitate information exchange; are a critical foundation for EHR They create opportunity for future cost reduction as vendors and systems converge on pan- Canadian and international standards They ease effort required for systems integration Mandatory Investment Eligibility Requirements Compliance to standards (infostructure, architecture) Initiatives must comply with existing guidelines or standards adopted by Infoway Where standards or guidelines do not exist, projects must support longer-term interoperability and congruence of solutions Infoways role is to set standards and requirements for robust, interoperable products and outcomes Standards
