Grammar focus The verb être (to be) is used to say I am – je suis and you are -tu es as well as tu es ?-are you? For example: Bonjour. Tu es malade? Oui, Je suis malade. Être is also the verb used to form the expressions c’est… it is and ce n’est pas…. it isn’t . C’est /ce n’est pas are very useful to describe, point out etc. e.g. Colours – C’est blanc, c’est rouge. Pointing something out c’est un bras/une jambe, c’est moi etc.

Teaching Tips Introduce the new expressions with c’est /ce n’est pas with actions and the song Play song Docteur je suis malade and ask class to identify the new language Join in with the whole song Practise simple dialogues with props Classroom language – Chantez! Écoutez et chantez!
