When you talk about food, you will often want to say some potatoes or some coffee. To do this, you need to use different words in French. With masculine nouns, use du: du pain = some bread du poisson = some fish With feminine nouns, use de la: de la confiture = some jam de la viande = some meat

With masculine or feminine nouns starting with a vowel (or a silent h), use de l: de leau minérale = some water Note that in English, we dont always use the word some, but in French, du, de la, de l or des is always used: Quest-ce que tu as acheté? Des fraises. What did you buy? Strawberries. With plural nouns, use des: des pommes = some apples des bonbons = some sweets
