Terminology Lesson Three: The terminology project

Sorts of terminology projects Company term base Communication issues between branches –Creation of a documentation service –Structuring documents for ‘sensitive’ areas nuclear, aeronautical, pharmaceutical –Localisation Technical writer’s term bas –Ensuring the coherency of a set of documents Translator’s term base –Structuring terminology in a particular field of activity

An example of a terminology project Dictionary of terms of mediaeval military architecture –Anaïs Breton –Lucie Deville –Catherine Zheng from third year LEA – diderot.fr/user/mojca_pecman/terminologie

Six documents Tree diagram –giving the concept structure of the field French term records English term records Protocol –explaining how the project was carried out Index –English – French –French - English

Tree diagram The tree diagram – gives a visual presentation of the field studied –which ones have been chosen for inclusion or exclusion in the dictionary –indicates how the concepts of the field are related to one another by labelling the type of relation

Main types of relationship Generic or hierarchical relationships –Hyperonym : the superordinate concept –Hyponym : the subordinate concept Meronymic or inclusive relationships –Holonym : the whole –Meronym : the part e.g. holonym: bike meronyms : frame, handlebar, wheel… Indirect relationships –Relations in time, space; function, aim, result…

Graphic conventions ISO graphic conventions –generic relations slanting lines –inclusive relations right-angled diagrams –other relationships not standardized (legend)

Question on Plates 2, 3 What is the relation between the symbols for –“holonyme/méronyme” –“peut inclure” ? How can you explain this?

Term record a term record –made up of fields groups of fields –Meaning –Other language information –Additional information –Administrative information

Meaning group The term itself = headword, entry (fr. vedette) The definition –How is it written (a sentence ?) –Source of the definition (authority?) Remarks about the definition

Other fields Expert Grammatical category –Noun –Verb –Adj Linguistic remarks –Synonyms –Antonyms Status –Standardized Contexts Derivates Collocations Concept modelling

The protocol How the terminology was produced Documentation –Popular science/popular history –Genuinely specialized literature Issues of term selection –Scope (just architecture or other related vocabulary – arms, etc.) –Criteria of inclusion

Terminology Lesson Four: the definition / la définition

Trois éléments d’une définition Domaine –généralement séparé de la définition Définisseur initial –incluant ou faux incluant Un ou plusieurs caractères –essentiel(s) (distinctif(s))

example Mesozoic era Geological era belonging to the Phanerozoic eon situated between approximately 65,000,000 and 180,000,00 years ago.

remarques 1. La vedette s’écrit avec une majuscule –parce qu’il s’agit d’un nom propre (La terminologie comporte donc aussi des noms propres) Sinon la vedette s’écrit en minuscule

remarques 2. Il s’agit d’une définition en compréhension - on situe le concept dans une classe les périodes géologiques - on le distingue des concepts connexes les autres ères géologiques note: compréhension = intension

Définition en extension Enumération des concepts spécifiques ou partitifs: –Exemple Mesozoic era: –Geological era made up of the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretacious periods

remarques 3.

Incluant Permet l’établissement d’une relation générique avec le concept à définir –Il s’agit du genre prochain The Mesozoic era is a geological era A bench is a seat…. du genre éloigné –A bench is a piece of furniture… du genre suprême –A bench is an object…
