La Toussaint… All Saint’s Day, November 1 st, forms part of a two day remembrance of the dead. On this day the French recall that the saints number far more than those included in the Church calendar. School children celebrate by taking a week’s vacation.
Le Jour des Morts… On November 2 nd, the Day of the Dead, the French pay tribute to their deceased relatives and loved ones. They do so by visiting the cemetery, where they decorate the graves with flowers. This holiday ressembles American Memorial Day, since honor is also paid to the memory of the war dead.
Père Lachaise…
Let’s tour one of the most famous cemeteries in the world, the Père Lachaise in Paris! This authentic graveyard is indeed a must-visit as it is home to a great number of famous graves. What an honor to lay down some flowers on the grave of Molière, Oscar Wilde or Frédéric Chopin, amongst others!
