Promoting creativity in French lessons. Using a song with year 8. Alice Ayel

Year 8: a song to introduce clothes. Objective of the lesson: to learn at least 12 new words related to clothes. to collect and learn words independently. to be able to recognise cognates, but to also be able to find that words do not always carry their literal meaning. to be able to understand a French song about items in a suitcase. to be able to write a song using clothes words and include some abstract items.

Starter: to learn words related to clothes. Students work in pairs to find out the meaning of different items of clothes. They classify the words into cognates / false friends. They then memorise the words by testing each other. 8W6 / 8W8 / 8T4

1) Main part of the lesson: to listen to the song and learn new words. Pupils learn about French popular singer and culture (Dorothée). Pupils listen and watch the song (all in French). They try to understand the gist of the song. 8C4 / 8C2

2) Main part of the lesson: to look at the song and understand it. Students work in groups and look at each part of the song. They answer questions about it. They find words that have similar sounds. They look for the meaning of new words in the dictionary. They classify the items in the suitcase in different categories: clothes, hats, colours, odd things….. 8T4 / 8T1 / 8W6

3) Main part of the lesson: to write own song. Students draw a list of the different items they would put in their suitcase. They then write their own song about the items they would pack in their suitcase. 8T6 / 8W1

Plenary: peer assessment. In pairs, pupils assess each other’s songs. They also show and sing their song to the whole class or in groups. 8L4 /8C4
