What you will be able to do Learn how to teach a set of vocabulary and incorporate it into a longer spoken and written passage. Consider ways of helping children to retain and retrieve language. Revise vocabulary possibly known already (colours) in a new context Use a selection of games and activities designed to help children practise vocabulary.

Voici la chambre

What might children say? “ I think “une télévision” goes with the television because it’s the same word”. I think “une table de snooker” is a snooker table because “une table” must mean a table, and snooker’s the same word. “Un miroir” looks like mirror “Une chaise” looks like chair I think “lit” means “bed” because it’s there four times and there are four types of bed” (a very exciting answer!). “Un petit lit” is a small bed because “petit” means small Oh, yeah, “un grand lit” is a big bed, then. So, “des lits superposés are bunk beds “because there is an s on “lits”, so it’s plural. “That means the other one is the four poster.”

Start off by writing “Dans ma chambre, il y a. Stop as if thinking and then choose an item, adding it to the phrase. When you have done this, add a comma, saying,“virgule” then think again and write down another word, again following with a comma. When you reach the final item, complete the sentence with a full stop, point. Then read the full text. Modelling writing Do primary teachers use this strategy already?

La mise en commun Où en sommes-nous ? We have: been practising the words for articles of furniture revised the colours been learning how to describe our bedroom been testing our memory with a long passage of French How many words can we remember so far?

Do one thing! How you can practise the language Ask children whether something is right: Hmm, est-ce que c’est correct ? Ask children what they notice: Qu’est-ce que vous remarquez ? Describe a bedroom What you can do with your class Practise a whole text with a cloze procedure Challenge the children to work out the meanings of new words, and to explain how they do so Select and choose a game to consolidate vocabulary Classroom routine Introduce phrases such as “on enlève’ in different situations, e.g. on enlève les pulls’ Let’s take off our pullovers
