Les Origines des Jeux Olympiques Les jeux olympiques ont commencé en Grèce, en 776 avant Jésus Christ, il y a plus que 2,700 ans. Les premiers jeux étaient en l’honneur de Zeus, un dieu très important pour les Grecs. Les jeux avaient lieu tous les quatre ans, comme aujourd’hui. La période entre les jeux s’appelait ‘une olympiade’, et durait quatre ans. Les premiers jeux consistaient d’une seule course, qui s’appelait ‘ un stade’ d’où vient notre mot ‘stade’. Seulement les hommes pouvaient participer, pas les femmes, et ils ont participé nus (sans vêtements)! Plus tard, les grecs ont inclus d’autres compétitions, comme la boxe, le javelot, le disque et les courses équestres. Les compétiteurs ont voyagé de partout en Grèce pour participer aux jeux. Un Empereur qui s’appelait Theodosius a terminé les jeux en 394 après Jésus Christ – il disait que les jeux n’étaient pas pour les chrétiens!

Les jeux olympiques modernes C’est un aristocrate français, Pierre de Fredy, Baron de Coubertin, qui a decidé de recommencer les jeux olympiques. Quand il était petit (il avait huit ans) la France a perdu la guerre contre la Prusse (l’Allemagne). Pierre habitait à Paris avec sa famille. Pierre pensait que, si les soldats français étaient en bonne forme, la France aurait gagné. En plus, pour Pierre, le sport était très important pour encourager les relations amicales entre les pays différents autour du monde. Son idée était alors de créer une grande compétition internationale pour les meilleurs athlètes du monde civilisé. Pierre a creé le Comité International Olympique le 23 juin 1894, à Paris. En 1896, les premiers jeux olympiques avait lieu à Athènes en Grèce. Le drapeau olympique est l'un des symboles des Jeux olympiques modernes, consistant en un drapeau formé de cinq anneaux de couleurs différentes (bleu, noir, rouge, jaune, et vert). Pierre de Fredy a dessiné le drapeau, qui représente les cinq continents (Europe, Afrique, Asie, Amérique et Océanie) unis par l’olympisme. Les six couleurs (en comptant le blanc en arrière-plan) représentent toutes les nations, car au moins l’une de ces couleurs était présente dans le drapeau de chaque pays. Ainsi ce drapeau est le symbole de l’universalité de l’esprit olympique.
