Bécassine, the first female main character in the history of comics appeared in 1905.

Zig et Puce appeared in 1925, written by Alain Saint Ogan. Zig and Puce, the thin and the chubby one, respectively, are two teenagers who have exotic adventures. On an expedition to the North Pole they meet their pet penguin, Alfred.

Les Aventures de Tintin is a series created by the Belgian artist Georges Rémi (1907–1983), who wrote under the pen name of Hergé. They first appeared in 1929 and there are now 24 albums of stories. Tintin is one of the most successful series of comic books ever.

Astérix first appeared in 1959 and the most recent book was written on 2009 (there are 34 books so far). Astérix is probably the most successful comic series of all time, with 11 films made and even an Astérix theme park near Paris.

Titeuf first appeared in 1992 and is still in production. It has a huge readership in France – over 1.8 million books are sold every year, and is the greatest moneymaker in the French market.
