Extended License Rights (New Product Versions, Virtual Desktop Access, Windows Companion Devices License, License Mobility) Extended Use Rights range from new product upgrades benefits, which are broad-based and apply to all product purchase, to specific use right that enable you to expand access to corporate desktop using a virtual desktop infrastructure, for example. Script: As consumer devices become increasingly powerful, affordable, and prevalent, it is inevitable that they will make their way into the enterprise. Today’s users want and expect to have the same kinds of technology experiences at work as they have at home, and they don’t want to have to segregate their computing for work and personal across different devices. This means greater work flexibility for your employees and an inevitable extension of device option and work locations, but it also presents new security and management challenges for IT. One challenge stemming from this reality is ensuring that users and devices are properly licensed, another is ensuring you have the right technology to support new devices and enable BYOD scenarios. Software Assurance is continually evolving to help you meet both of these challenges. First I want to talk about some of ways SA helps you meet licensing needs as new types of devices are brought into the workplace. At a base level Software Assurance covers and extends the use of company-owned devices used in the workplace, enabling them to access corporate desktops locally or through VDI environment with Windows VDA rights. These devices can also use Windows To Go capabilities to run a fully manageable Windows 8 Enterprise corporate desktop on a bootable USB stick. Now there are other SA benefits that apply to this device, like Roaming Use Rights. But here I want to keep our conversation to devices appearing IN the workplace. If the company decides to also purchase and bring in a Windows RT device to serve as a companion devise in the workplace, that Windows RT device can access a virtual desktop using Windows RT Companion VDA rights included with SA. Where companies are using non-Windows devices and/or allowing personally owned devices to be used as companion devices, SA lets you licenses these devices with a Windows Companion Subscription License (CSL). From a licensing perspective this means, the Windows CSL grants the primary user of the SA-licensed device rights to access a corporate desktop through a VDI or Windows To Go on up to four additional devices. From a license management and costs perspective Windows CLSs means much more. Let me explain what I mean. Employees bringing personally owned devices present a unique set of issues for IT as administrators are often unaware of the types or number of devices that are coming in, making licensing compliance a problem. Further, prior to Windows CLSs, each device would have to be separately licensed making BYOD scenarios cost prohibitive. Windows CSLs help address this problem. Because the CSL covers multiple devices, the company only needs to purchase one CSL for each primary user (of an SA covered device). Additionally because the CSL will cost less than a single VDA license, this scenario can now be enabled with fewer licenses and at a lower cost per license, meaning real savings. And IT knows that they are compliant regardless of what types of devices their employees are bringing so long each employee brings no more than 4 devices to work . To help you support new devices and enable BYOD scenarios SA provides unique access to premium feature found in Window 8 Enterprise. While there are several other compelling features with Windows 8 Enterprise, I want to mention a few here. Windows To Go, which I mention before, lets you run a corporate Windows 8 environment on a USB stick from anywhere. This allows IT organizations to support the “Bring Your Own PC” trend and businesses can give contingent staff access to the corporate environment without compromising security. DirectAccess With DirectAccess, a user can access the data, apps, files, and people more securely so that he can stay productive on the road without having to go through VPN connection. VDI enhancements: Enhancements in Microsoft RemoteFX and Windows Server 2012, provide users with a rich desktop experience with the ability to play 3D graphics, use USB peripherals and touch-enabled devices across any type of network (LAN or WAN) for VDI scenarios. Enterprise Sideloading of Windows 8 Apps: Domain joined PCs and tablets running Windows 8 Enterprise will be enabled to sideload custom Windows 8 line-of-business apps directly as opposed to from the public Windows Store. Last, Software Assurance customers have the ability to subscribe to MDOP, which helps you take advantage of desktop virtualization, manage Windows features, and restore user productivity after a system issue. One of the newest MDOP tools, Microsoft User Experience Virtualization or UE-V for short, allows users to change devices and keep a consistent and personal Windows experience, regardless if they are using a rich desktop or a VDI session, a physically installed or virtually deployed application. Resources: According to a Unisys study (conducted by IDC), 95% of information workers now use at least one self-purchased device for work. If deployment advice, support and training are needed, they are included in SA and can be used at will when these services are required. Last, managing licenses also becomes less of a burden as rights to new products as well as extended use rights like those that support VDI environments are known, and can be used as those solutions are needed. I’ll restate that SA can help you successfully delivery IT within the IT landscape you face today, but that landscape is likely to change. SA is helping customers take advantage of technology delivery innovations—from cloud services that can shift high capital expenses into lower operating expenses while reducing the burden on your IT staff, to extending VDI to build greater infrastructure efficiencies. Devices eligible for use under the Windows CSL include any type of personally owned device as well as corporate owned non-x86 devices. The CSL costs less than licensing a single device under Windows VDA and because it covers multiple devices, the CSL makes licensing Bring Your Own Device scenarios simpler and more cost effective for customers. For example, a company with an EA covering 5,000 PCs wants to enable 1,000 of their employees whose primary device is licensed with SA as part of the 5,000, to also be able to bring personal devices from home to access their corporate desktop using either Windows To Go or VDI. These users might bring two or three different devices into work, but because the CSL covers multiple devices, the company only needs to purchase 1,000 CSL licenses. Additionally because the CSL will cost less than a single VDA license, this scenario can now be enabled with fewer licenses and at a lower cost per license, meaning real savings for the customer. And IT knows that they are compliant regardless of what types of devices their employees are bringing so long each employee brings no more than 4 devices to work.
