The first challenge is variety. The variety of information has grown. Nearly everything now can be digitized into stored information. Such as audio or video, health patient records, cardiology, radiology, PACS information, other types of documents and web content. Variety is making it more challenging because often times information has some unique needs, such as streaming requirements, or is in a format that is more difficult to search or to provide a consistent set of policies. The second challenge is volume. Data is growing at substantial rate, faster than most IT managers are comfortable with. Here IDC estimates that we're going to continue to grow 60 percent year on year in the amount of new disk shipments, and that's a significant number. As companies digitize the information they have on paper and film, that growth will appear not just on disk, but on tape also. And many people keep too many copies of the same information, including out-of-date copies that are just slightly different. And the third challenge is the velocity of change. It used to be that people could limit their changes to their IT environment to a holiday season, perhaps Golden Week in May or the winter holidays around December. But those days are gone, people are making changes every month, every weekend, and possibly throughout the week. Eighty-five percent of these problems are caused by changing something and often times storage admins do not have a full idea of the impact or implications of making a mistake. And a lot of these problems, 80 percent, are not detected by the IT staff that caused them but instead by end users unable to do their jobs, impacted by an outage, not having access to the information they need. Background/Reference New types of information are being stored on digital systems. Various causes are making the volume of data growing exponentially, and it is getting more and more difficult to manage. New data types are now being captured directly to digital format, rather than scanned to manually entered as needed. This includes X-rays that are being captured digitally, rather than stored on film. Audio and Video streams are now recorded and stored digitally. Photographs are now being captured and stored digitally. These often are much larger files in GB than traditional text documents. The growth is exponential, with IDC analyst estimating that we continue our 60% growth. Storage hardware such as disk and tape are dropping in price about 30-40% per year per GB, but the labor cost to manage that storage is not. The velocity of change is overwhelming most IT shops. 80% of problems are not detected by the IT staff, until an end-user reports it. Also for zLinux, IBM has just introduced the TS 7510 Virtualization Engine for tape. This offering can improve backup and restore application performance. IBM is the tape virtualization industry leader, having introduced the first Virtual Tape offering for zSeries in Since then, customers have found that tape virtualization, like disk virtualization, can simplify operations while reducing operational costs.
