PRONUNCIATION EN FRANÇAIS

BASIC TIPS  It makes sense to try to get the pronunciation as good as you can but you are not expected to sound completely French.  Pronunciation is only one aspect of learning a language ~ so, don’t worry unduly about it.  You can be honest with the children if you are unsure, saying that you will check it with someone else. (We are always available to help if needs be.)  Teaching the alphabet is a good idea for learning the sounds of the letters.  Using songs/poems and tongue-twisters can be really good fun.  Familiarise yourself with the alphabet and the basic sound combinations and you’ll be fine. The level of the language you’ll be teaching is not that complex.

L’ALPHABET  Lesson  L’alphabet(l’alfabeh)  A~AHH~ASHO~OHV~VAY  B~BAYI~ EEP~PAYW~DOOBLA-VAY  C~SAYJ~SHEEQ~KOOX~ICKS  D~DAYK~KAR~AIRY~EE-GREC  E~EUHL~ELLS~ESSZ~ZED  F~EFFM~EMT~TAY  G~SHAYN~ENU~CUE

TEACHING ACTIVITIES  Write the letters up and get pupils to listen/repeat.  Get pupils to put the letters into groups ~ 1. letters that sound the same as the English 2. letters which sound similar 3. letters which sound very different.  Write just the letters up and play the 3 lives game.  Mouth the letters and get them to guess which one you’re saying.  When teaching the alphabet you can sing/say it to a marching tune and get the pupils to echo. Make it into a competition between different groups in the class.  Use their whiteboards and get them to write the letters they hear you say ~ play bingo ~ spell words/names ~ hangman  Move on to teaching them how to spell their names. Comment t’appelles-tu? Comment t’appelles-tu? Je m’appelle bla bla bla Je m’appelle bla bla bla Comment ça s’écrit ? Comment ça s’écrit ? Ça s’écrit bla bla bla. Ça s’écrit bla bla bla.  Spell out names and get the pupils to stand up when they hear their own.  It is well worth while taking your time over this and allowing them to take it on board without feeling pressurised.

SOUND COMBINATIONS  CH=SHCHIEN~CHAT  EU=UGHNEUF~DEUX  AU=OHCHOCOLAT CHAUD  UN/AN/EN/IN/ON = KEEP MOUTH OPEN BRUN ~ ANS ~ VENDREDI ~ QUINZE ~ BON BRUN ~ ANS ~ VENDREDI ~ QUINZE ~ BON  QUE = KEUH MUSIQUE  OU = OOHDOUZE  U = AS IN CUEJUS ~ SALUT  OI = WATROIS  É/ET = EHMusée/PERROQUET  EUR = AS IN SIRSOEUR  AIN/EIN = AH (MOUTH OPEN)PAIN  ER/EZ = EYjouer ~ écoutez  TION = SEEOHADDITION
