There’s a total of about 700 to 900 accidents/year. This of course only includes a/c with a MTOW less than 5700 kg. Among these, are gliders, balloons, ultra-lights as well as small jets and turbo-props operating in public transport, so the range is quite wide. We thus have potentially 900 recorders to read-out every year. And if this is extrapolated to all EASA countries, it could be thousands a year. The red line is the number of fatal accidents for the 3 countries combined: about 100/year, and this number remained pretty much constant over the past 10 years. I tried to get a estimation of how many among those have uncertain circumstances, where we don’t know what happen. Usually, for non-fatal accidents, it’s possible to answer this question thanks to witnesses and pilot interviews. But for fatal accidents, it is often harder. So we thought that getting the number of accidents for which we cannot answer the question : “WHAT HAPPENED ” would be a good indication of the need for flight recorders. Unfortunately, sounding databases is bit tricky, and it’s hard to get reliable figures. For ECCAIRS users, the field “Occurrence Category” set to UNKNOWN does not seem to mean the same for all of us.
