Context History Originally part of Katsina, a Hausa state, Maradi was the home to one of several Hausa traditional rump states, formed by rulers and nobility who fled the rise of the Sokoto Caliphate. By the time of Niger's independence in 1960, Maradi was a centre of Hausa culture, vying with the larger traditional Hausa centre of Zinder to the east. Population of Maradi is 667 240 .
Context Economy Maradi is a merchant city, on the north region of Kano, Nigeria. This explains why one can use either the West African CFA franc or the Nigerian Naira for transaction in Maradi.
Context
Maradi and Katsina Maradi and Katsina both share the same cultural and religious values. The idea of this cooperation between two Rotary clubs of two different countries, even though they do not belong to the same district, was inspired by the common social and economic values of these two cities.
How we organized the creation of the Maradi Rotary Club ?
Steps of the project The DG appointed his Special Representative with the mission of creating a new club in Maradi; Round Visits to all Rotary clubs in Niamey to collect contact of prospects in Maradi; We contacted them individually to brief them about Rotary beforehand;
Steps of the project Reached out to fellow Rotarians in RC Katsina Metropolis through Rotarian Ndanusa to ask for their support in the project and to invite them to join us on the day fixed for the first meeting in Maradi We agreed on a date when all prospects in Maradi can be available to attend and learn about the Rotary experience.

Contribution of Katsina Rotarians The city of Katsina is geographically closer to Maradi than Niamey where the sponsoring club (RC Niamey) is located. Katsina and Maradi language identity, has facilitated a better understanding of Rotary’s Mission and Values;

Contribution of Katsina Rotarians ….. At our first meeting, the discussion articulated meaningful and impactful actions achieved in the city of Katsina by their Clubs, especially related to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and also their tireless actions to kick Polio out of Nigeria.

The Inspiration Rotarians are elites of the society. They join to devote pure altruism,time, energy and resources, to pleasantly change the lives of the people in their communities. As Helen Keller said: “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much!”
