Pneumocystis jiroveci (formerly classified Pneumocystis carinii) has always been a major cause of illness and death in patients with HIV infection. Once thought to be a parasite, genomic analysis revealed that P. jiroveci is in fact a fungus that infects only humans, whereas P. carinii is pathogenic only in immunodeficient rats. Despite the change in taxonomy of this pathogen, the term PCP is still acceptable shorthand for Pneumocystis
